The famous mattar wala, who had been setting up his stall on the pavement of Halwasiya market for some 50 odd years, is no longer there. But if you’re a fan of his mattar, as much as we are, then you’ll be happy to know he hasn’t winded up his shop. In fact, he’s been forced to take up a shop in one of the lanes of Halwasiya due to the Metro construction work in the market.

Prakash and his father have been setting up their mattar stall since the last 48 years and even today, they continue to be the best mattar in town, providing the same taste and quality as they did, decades ago. Their secret – they don’t think of this as a job or a piece of work, but are in fact, super passionate about feeding people.
Due to the ongoing Metro construction work in Hazratganj, the father-son duo have had to shift away from the pavement and inside the market, which has resulted in a significant loss of customers. Earlier, they would boil upto 10kgs of mattar a day, and it would all be consumed. Nw that has reduced to a mere 2kg!
SECRET RECIPE
Their ingredients are freshly sourced and they use their own masala – a combination of 12 ingredients, the recipe of which is severely guarded. In fact, the mattar or the chickpeas are not soaked overnight and boiled in a pressure cooker, but are left to simmer for some four hours! The smooth texture of the mattar is thus achieved.
But, now that Now Lucknow has re-discovered one of the best and oldest mattar wala in town, we are hoping that they will once again see an influx of customers.
