Don’t write letters anymore? That doesn’t quite matter. The General Post Office (GPO) in Hazratganj, Lucknow is interesting not just for posting and receiving mail. Here are some reasons why we think you should visit the GPO, Lucknow at least once with your kids:
MY STAMP by INDIA POST
Ever wanted to see yourself on a stamp? Here’s your chance to do it. You can’t personalised postage stamp sheets made at the GPO for as little as Rs. 300. Each personalised stamp will carry a thumbnail picture of you, along with a choice of logos of institutions, or images of artwork, heritage buildings, famous tourist places, historical cities, wildlife, other animals and birds etc., on a selected template sheet. Pretty cool!
THE PHILATELIC MUSEUM
For philatelists, this place is a treasure trove of information. But even for those who do not pursue philately as a hobby, there’s something quaint about this small museum, located on the first floor of the GPO building. With special stamps released on different occasions, and to mark different events, this is a rather off-beat way to learn about the country’s history. You can also pick beautiful postcards and such from the museum. Would come handy if you’re looking for images for projects, etc.
THE BRITISH-ERA BUILDING
Built in the early 1900s, the high arched roof and the pillars are reminiscent of Gothic architecture. There’s a tunnel above the roof, that keeps the grand hall cool during summers, while the double-lined walls keep the building warm during winters. Interestingly, they say there’s no metal used in the construction of this building. Plus, there’s a fully-functional clock tower at the top of the building, with a gong to make the different hours of the day. So, if you happen to be there – or around at 12 noon, you can hear the gong go off 12 times!
OTHER AMENITIES
The GPO building now has an updation centre for Aadhar Cards. Also, any work related to BSNL mobile phones – from post-paid and prepaid plans to bills, can be done here. There’s also a small gift shop at the entrance that sells cups with images of Lucknow’s monuments and landmark events. This shop, right at the entrance to the building, also sells Ganga jal.
