October 31st is when the famous Ghazal singer, Begum Akhtar was buried by her mother Mushtari Bai in her mango orchards in Pasand Bagh, Thakur Ganj in Lucknow. After the restoration of her mazaar in 2012, Begum Akhtar death anniversary is marked by a musical tribute at her mazaar. The tradition of Hazari at her Mazaar was started by Shruti Sadolikar Katkar, the Vice Chancellor of Bhatkande University, Lucknow.

The restoration work at the mazaar was designed and supervised by New Delhi based architect Ashish Thapar. Padma Shri Padam Bhushan Shanti Hiranand and Saleem Kidwai initiated the restoration and provided invaluable inputs throughout. The renovation was made possible because of a grant from the Ministry of Culture, Department of Archaeology, Government of India. The renovation has been free. The pietra dura work on the graves was done in Agra and has been donated by Mumbai based designer Parag Pradhan. The Sadbhavana Trust is maintainting the Mazaar.
Music aficionados and history buffs visit the mazaar the year round.

This October 31st, a Shradhanjali to Begum Akhtar on her mazaar will have a performance by Sarangi exponent Murad Ali Khan and Athar Hussain on the tabla.
